Programme Approval and Monitoring

Approval and monitoring are the processes by which the HSE Clinical Measurement Oversight Group approve education and training programmes on the recommendation of the Irish Institute of Clinical Measurement Physiology to ensure that the Criteria and Standards of Proficiency among the five Clinical Measurement Physiology Professions are met:

  • Cardiac Clinical Measurement Physiology
  • Gastrointestinal (GI) Clinical Measurement Physiology
  • Neurophysiology Clinical Measurement Physiology
  • Respiratory Clinical Measurement Physiology
  • Vascular Clinical Measurement Physiology

Education providers in the Republic of Ireland that offer programmes that lead to qualifications acting as an entry point to any of the above professions, will be eligible to apply for approval of the programme through the Irish Institute of Clinical Measurement Physiology. Approved programmes are subject to monitoring on an on-going basis.

Approval and monitoring consists of the following stages;
  1. Programme Approval
  2. Monitoring

Stage 1 – Programme Approval

The first stage of the process is programme approval. The provider must demonstrate that the programme associated with a qualification in Clinical Measurement physiology meets the criteria for education and training programmes and has a system in place to consistently and safely produce graduates who meet the standards of proficiency for the profession. Programme approval usually involves an approval visit to the site(s) where the programme is delivered.

Stage 2 – Monitoring

The second stage of the process is monitoring. The monitoring process allows the Health Service Executive (HSE) to satisfy itself as to the continuing suitability of the academic education, assessments, examinations, and practice education experience provided by any education and training programme approved by the HSE. The programmes must continue to show that they meet the criteria for education and training programmes and the standards of proficiency for the five Clinical Measurement Physiology professions:

  • Cardiac Clinical Measurement Physiology
  • Gastrointestinal (GI) Clinical Measurement Physiology
  • Neurophysiology Clinical Measurement Physiology
  • Respiratory Clinical Measurement Physiology
  • Vascular Clinical Measurement Physiology
