History & Structure

The Irish Institute of Clinical Measurement Physiology (IICMP) was established in 2004 when a group of professionals from the five professions of Cardiac Physiology, Gastrointestinal Physiology, Respiratory Physiology, Neurophysiology, and Vascular Physiology came together.

Their initial goal was to set the educational standards, progress the development of the Bachelor of Science (honours) in Clinical Measurement Physiology, professional development and be a representative body for the five professions. The Institute was then officially recognised by the Department of Health and the HSE as the only representative body for Clinical Measurement Physiologists in Ireland.

The founding members of the IICMS were:

  • Lynette O’Sullivan – Cardiac Physiologist
  • Trish Lawlor – Gastrointestinal Physiologist
  • Ann Coughlan – Neurophysiologist
  • Michele Agnew – Respiratory Physiologist
  • Ann O’Shaughnessy – Vascular Physiologist

In 2022 the IICMS changed its name to the Irish Institute of Clinical Measurement Physiology (IICMP) to align with the professional title of Clinical Measurement Physiologist, and in 2024, the Institute formed a Company Limited by Guarantee (CLG).

Structure of the Institute

The Irish Institute of Clinical Measurement Physiology (IICMP) is governed by a Board of Directors, composed of dedicated volunteers who meet 8–12 times per year to oversee the Institute’s affairs.

Each Clinical Measurement Physiology profession is represented on the Board, with up to two elected members from their respective Executive Committees.

The Board delegates the leadership and management of the Institute to the CEO, who:

  • Provides strategic direction and ensures effective governance.
  • Oversees the Institute’s operations and organisational development.
  • Engages with key stakeholders across healthcare and policymaking.
  • Represents the Institute externally, advocating for the profession.

The CEO is supported by the Institute’s team, working collaboratively to advance the mission and objectives of the Institute.

IICMP Executive Committees

The Institute has five Executives Committees that represent each of the five Clinical Measurement Physiology professions.

  1. Cardiac Physiology Executive
  2. Gastrointestinal Physiology Executive
  3. Neurophysiology Executive
  4. Respiratory Physiology Executive
  5. Vascular Physiology Executive

These committees are volunteer members who meet regularly to represent their profession and inform the work of the Institute. Each Executive appoints roles to the members of the Executive as required and elects two members to sit as directors of the Institute.
