Job Title: Senior Respiratory Physiologist

Department: Respiratory and Sleep Department

Reports to: Chief II Respiratory Physiologist

Overall Purpose of Job

To provide exceptional patient care in an environment where quality, respect, caring and compassion are at the centre of all we do.

To participate in the performance of diagnostic testing of the respiratory system and sleep quality of patients with a view to aiding in the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary and sleep disorders.

 

Key Responsibilities & Deliverables

The senior respiratory physiologist should be familiar with the theory, techniques and range of equipment used in current medical practice for the diagnosis, treatment and care of patients.

§ Conduct a full range of non-invasive respiratory diagnostic tests including spirometry, reversibility studies, transfer factor testing, lung volumes by gas dilution and body plethysmography, maximal inspiratory and expiratory pressure, skin allergy testing. mannitol challenge testing, exercise desaturation testing and cardiopulmonary exercise testing. To conduct and analyse full polysomnography sleep studies and CPAP titration studies. All in compliance with departmental and hospital policy and procedure.

§ Having a complete understanding of procedures and an ability to make accurate measurements is essential.

§ Be responsible for training and supervision of more junior members of staff.

§ Ability to effectively communicate with Consultants, GP’s and hospital staff regarding patients’ needs.

§ Ensure the timely production and delivery of patient procedures.

§ Maintain required departmental records.

§ Assure that equipment is maintained, cleaned and calibrated according to manufacturer’s specifications.

§ Report any malfunctions as they occur per hospital policy.

§ Participate in department process improvement projects.

§ Maintain infection control procedures to protect patients and staff.

§ Maintain a safe working environment.

§ Maintain a professional and courteous relationship with all patients and hospital departments.

§ Order and store adequate supplies in compliance with company policy.

§ To keep abreast in understanding and knowledge of all new developments in the field of respiratory.

§ As medical procedures change and new developments are introduced the respiratory physiologist must update his or her knowledge and training.

§ Attend meetings as required.

§ Report accidents and incidents. Participate in the investigation and remedial action.

§ This is not an exhaustive listing and the respiratory physiologist will perform such other duties as may be assigned to him or her from time to time.

 

Personal Specification

 

Essential Statutory Qualifications & Experience:

 

Possess the BSc in Clinical Measurement from Technology University Dublin or Dublin Institute of Technology.

OR

Possess an equivalent relevant scientific qualification (Level 8) as confirmed by the Irish Institute of Clinical Measurements Physiology (IICMP).

 

OR, if qualified in or prior to 2005;

 

(a) Possess the Certificate in Medical Physics and Physiological Measurement (MPPM) from Dublin Institute of Technology

OR

(b) Possess an equivalent relevant scientific qualification as confirmed by the Irish Institute of Clinical Measurement Physiology (IICMP).

Experience

§ Minimum of three years relevant post qualification experience required.

§ Good general knowledge of respiratory testing and sleep testing.

§ Good organisational and time management skills.

§ Proactive approach to quality control and service improvements.

§ Paediatric experience is desirable but not essential.
